A Year in Review at Woodlawn Memorial Park: Reflecting, Remembering, and Moving Forward
By Christina Furtado-Burke
As we come to the close of another meaningful year at Woodlawn Memorial Park, we find ourselves looking back with gratitude and looking ahead with optimism. The year was filled with moments of growth—both in the services we offer and in the connections we share with our community. Every project, every event, and every conversation with a family reminded us of the importance of our mission: to honour lives, preserve memories, and care for our sacred grounds.

A New Green Burial Section: Taylor’s Meadow
One of the most significant milestones this year was the development of Taylor’s Meadow, our green burial section. This space, named in honour of our former General Manager, who served the community for over 40 years, is the realization of a long-held vision—one rooted in environmental mindfulness, simplicity, and respect for the land as we follow the 5 principles of green burial. Taylor’s Meadow is more than an expansion; it’s a continuation of a legacy, and a promise to future generations that we will always look for ways to serve with sustainability and dignity.
Growth In Many Forms
Growth took many forms this year. We strengthened our ability to care for the cemetery with the addition of a new truck to our fleet, helping our grounds team continue their tireless work with efficiency and pride. We also introduced new cremation burial options featuring natural armour stones, offering families a beautiful and unique way to memorialize their loved ones. Bronze plaques can be added, allowing each space to tell a story that can be visited, touched, and remembered. In support of these additions, our cemetery bylaws were thoughtfully updated, ensuring clarity, respect, and responsible stewardship moving forward.

Beyond the physical changes to our grounds, the heart of Woodlawn continued to be felt through the events that brought our community together. On Mother’s Day, we welcomed families to our Walk to Remember, a gentle day of reflection and honour. Father’s Day brought a different kind of celebration, as engines hummed and memories rolled in during our Classic Car Night, complete with food vendors and shared smiles. And as November arrived, we once again stood together in quiet gratitude during our Remembrance Day Service, paying tribute to the brave individuals who served our country. Each event reminded us that remembrance isn’t only about the past—it’s about connection, healing, and shared experience. Remember to follow us on Facebook to stay updated on our events and view photos from past years.

Behind the scenes, we continued our important work of digitizing our historic records, ensuring the stories held within our archives will be preserved and more accessible in the digital world we live in today. It’s a careful process, but a meaningful one—one that bridges our past with the future. This vital step helps us with our aim of connecting families with their loved ones’ histories through our genealogical research.
None of these accomplishments would be possible without the people who bring Woodlawn to life each day. Our grounds team worked through every season, maintaining the beauty and peace of our park while supporting families at graveside with quiet care. Our office team remained a steady presence, always ready to answer questions, guide decisions, and offer comfort. Together, we continue to serve with empathy, professionalism, and pride.
Reflection, Gratitude, and the Promise of the Future
As we close the chapter on this year, we do so with full hearts. We have welcomed new beginnings, honoured sacred traditions, and stayed true to the values that define us. What a year it has been—and what an exciting one lies ahead. With every improvement we make and every family we support, we continue to strengthen the legacy of Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Here’s to reflection, to gratitude, and to the promise of the future.
